I was injured in 1991 due to a motorcycle accident. I have been married for 17 yrears and we have two children. I very much enjoy the sport of handcycling, I try to get out and ride as often as I can. Good luck Jeff and keep up the good work.

Just wanted to say I have seen quite a few hand cyclists riding and just as I do with other cyclists, I like to talk to them and strike up a friendship. One of these fellows turns out to be an engineering student at the university where I work.

A year or so ago i met a young man (17 or so) who was riding a handcycle around Fiesta Island in San Diego. He was having a difficult time and rather than continue with my work out, I rode along with him. Later I talked to him mom who was trailing behind on a bicycle and it turned he was not paralyzed but had sereve motor control problems and this handcycle was the closest thing to independence he had. He was determined to make the best of it.

There bicycle time trials held a Fiesta Island several times a year and sometimes Handcyclists will enter. Here is a link to a photo of one competitor.

http://www.damonrinard.com/tt/01feb11/mvc795s.jpg

She looks like she is riding one of those Top End handcycles. Her name is Robin and she is one tough rider.

Anyway, best of luck with your page and best of luck with your new cycle.

I am friends with handcyclists in St Pete, Michel and Scott. Michel and Scott are on our USCF team, Team American Classic. They did not have any local venues to race handcycles other than running races or triathlons. So, we decided to offer a handcycle event at our annual bicycle race, the Dade Battle of Brilliance Criterium! My friends are my connection to handcycling and we hope more people will give the sport a try.

One of the greatest things to ever happen to me riding my bike was to have my little girl, Morgan, see me train and begin to take an intrest in riding and racing. We completed her first triathlon at age 7. And although nothing compares to the satisfaction I got from that, I also like being on the back of a group ride when an able bodied rider falls off of the pace. Nothing better than comming around him a few mph faster and bridging the gap he created. I appreciate the respect we get from our able bodied counterparts, after all we train just as hard as they do.

I am fortunate to live in a place where you can literally train year round. I have my best friend and training partner, Scott McNeice, two blocks away. We are always pushing each other. Also, from early spring until late fall, there are group rides organized by three clubs- the St Petersburg Mad Dogs (triathlon), The St Pete Bicycle Club, and Team American Classic, every day of the week.

There is nothing better than being fit and knowing that you are fit. It is a way of life.

Before purchasing the Lightning handcycle, I also tried the Freedom Ryder. Both bikes are very similar, and easy to use. With both bikes you lean to turn. I tried another bike, I think it was a "Top End", but you turned the front wheel like a normal bike. This would be fine, except your front legs lay on both sides of the wheel, and when you turn the wheel, your legs go with it!

I love living in the Baltimore/Washington DC area, as there are many bike trails around. My favorite is a trail around the BWI airport and this connects up to a trail that takes you down to Annapolis.

Hope to see other handcyclists out there!

I have gotten into the sport and loved every minute of it. I have met some really nice people that have helped me out in many ways to learn about the handcycle and also life in general. Once you get on your cycle you will not want to get off as it lets you see so much more of the world that you just can't see in the chair. Hope all will try it and see if this is a way of life for you. I have started this page for all to be able to share their experiences and also for people to have a place to talk about things they like in the sport so please go at it. I enjoy the sport and hope to get better as time goes on. I have loved everything about my cycle since I got it, and it is a great hobby also.

Was injured while working as a motion picture stuntman. Was William Shatner's and others double and blew a motorcycle stunt in 1973. My first two h/c were handmade because back then anything different had to be designed and handmade. I used h/c as a cross trainer for my other sports and now use it primarily for fitness and motivation. This is a great site in that it seems to be updated all the time. I used to go to USHF site daily but go here now because it is more currrent. Keep up the good work.

I plan on entering more running races especially marathons. Perhaps it is time to do as the Europeans and get some exposure for the handcycling cause. Perhaps bad PR is better than none at all. I work at BLS as a Mathematical Statistician. Been there since 1979. I've been shying away from the gym recently and using the trainer allot. Muscles don't want to grow much at age 53 so I'm attacking the cardiovascular system. Here's to good health and handcycling will help to get you there.

First wheel chair athlete to win and finish the Hawaii Iron man without breaking the rules-1996. I tried to use a hand crank and it was easeier and faster than addapting to a regular bike with prosthetics. I rode a Lightning handcycle with quick release rear wheels. The wheels are loose and is extremly unstable. Also weighs much more than advertised. I have chosen to ride with my prosthetics for awhile longer to help the world of prosthetics. I've won a couple of world championships in triathlons. I used to work with Broward County Fire Rescue Paramedics, received the medal of vallor from the NYFD, Started a charity to raise money for the on going health problems of fire rescue workers at ground zero. Sept 27 I leave Ft. Lauderdale on my bike riding to NY, raising money for the charity.

First race was on a borrowed XLT 24 (all stock). Detroit Marathon in 1:21:09. I'd like to get my own handcycle and start racing, but living far below the poverty level doesn't facilitate such endeavors. Anybody want to sponsor me?

Jeff, I like your web-site and will pass it along to my friends, keep up the good work. I'm an able bodied handcyclist and I volunteer with the Adaptive Sports & Adventure Program (ASAP) here in Charlotte. I love my volunteer work with ASAP and have so many good friends that I enjoy riding with. ASAP is having its annual Cycle to the Sea event April 11-13. The ride will begin in Monroe, NC and end in Myrtle Beach, SC. We cover 210 miles in 3 days and have fun the whole way. I would like to invite you and your friends to join us.

Warmest Regards, Bob

Handcycling is pure joy. Our family is able to enjoy rides together on a regular basis, on vacation, and we are also able to join with friends on the rails to trails in our area. It is a great way to meet new people, to stay healthy, and have fun at the same time. The Invacare Gold is an awesome machine--thanks to Scott at Bike-on.com for introducing me to handcycling and for my first handcycle that led to the Gold!!!! If anyone is coming to the western PA area there are many trails along the Allegheny River and through the national forests. Wildlife abounds! Riding with other handcyclists makes riding even more fun.

I wanted to find a place in N.VA that sells handcycles, specifically so that I could look at the different models, and find out about how to do a transfer into and out of them, particularly if they are low to the ground. I would like to buy a handcycle to take advantage of the trails in this area, and have something to do outdoors to improve my fitness.

A new bike is expensive but worth every swedish krona! To all firstime buyers, take time to think how you're gonna use a bike, and ask others what they think about their bikes. When you have your bike, just get out there and hit that tarmac! All the best to all of you from Sweden.

A little bit of bitching...why is it that a handcycle, which is not all that different than a regular trike, is so overwhelmingly expensive? A $250 conversion kit for a $300 trike gives you the same basic functional handcycle! And that includes wheels, 27 gear arrangement, etc.... Handcycling is a sport that is not being ignored, there just are no participants. Cost is a real reason that can't be ignored. Far too many handicapped people are on fixed incomes. But that's no reason for the wheelchair manufacturers to move in and suck a person's bank account dry! There are three large wheelchair manufacturers that make handcycles. I won't name them as there's a good possibility you're sitting in one of their products right now. However, they need to lighten up a little bit and get off the "milking" bandwagon! "Value for your money" is definitely missing here. Let me explain. A quick analysis of a handcycle will reveal that if you purchase a 27 speed bike from just about any store, it has all the gears and the mechanical parts that can be be retrofitted into a handcycle. I just did it...and spent a total of $232.34 for additional parts. The welding was done by a student from the college near here. No charge. In reality, the larger manufacturers can purchase all the parts in bulk, as a substantially reduced price than I paid. What you pay for are the sales staff that don't bother returning your call when you have a problem, the secretaries that look at their phones before picking them up and if it's a client, the call goes to their voice mail, the flashy brochures that compare to those at the car dealership, and that new building they just built downtown, well you pay for that too. Before I forget, I have to remind you that the frames are prebuilt although this is denied, and where are they made? Consider this: Made in the USA is frequently not on the label. China is the likely source! OK, I got it off my chest. Have a great day and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas (yes, it's Christmas) and the best in the New Year. :)

This Tells A little about you

Bought my bike used (and slightly abused) and I'm in the process of making it ridable once again. 24 speed shimano gearing makes it go and ProMax disc brakes make it stop. Can't wait to get it out and about on the local trails in the SanFran Bay Area. Haven't owned a bike since high school, so this should be a blast. Just after a car accident in '76, a doctor got me interested in working out for the paralympics as a weight lifter, but about the time I was getting 'up' there in weight (220 x 50 reps), I ran into a physical therapist who realized I had partial nerve function in my legs and said "what are you working on your arms for, you should be working your legs!" After a couple years of hard work I got to the point where I could walk with just a cane. But I fell on some ice while in college and broke my femur, losing most of the motor control of that leg. SO I ended up walking on crutches for 22 years, until a brain aneurysm a couple years ago put me in a wheelchair. Now I realize that I need to get myself some better method of exercise, and a handcycle should fit the bill. Cheers, great site, best of luck with it!! John

This is actually for my 17 yr.old son Michael, He was just recently injured. He is in rehab now at Childrens Hosp. in Seattle. He has always been very athletic and active and although I know we are early in the stages of his recovery, when I showed him a picture of a handcycle in an ad in Spoke&Sports Mag we got from one of the therapist,he got excited about the idea, I have always liked to ride and am hoping this would be something we will be able to do together. Thanks, Mike

Purchasing my handcycle has changed my life for the best after my accident. 2 centuries and over 4500 miles+. Planning to ride coast to coast before my 50th birthday in 4 years.

Last year diagnosed with congestive heart failure, most likely from volume overload and venous disorders from paraplegia. Biking is a good form of exercise for my condition.

I would have to say handcycling is one of the most rewarding exercise that anyone with a disability can do. As anyone would know after suffering a life changing event such as a spinal cord injury. I would advise anyone that's thinking about getting a cycle to contact your local rehab center and see if they have any hand bikes to test ride, or call a handcycle dealer and get more info on what would be a good choice for your injury level.
